for the last hour calling jodi arias a manipulative individual who wants to play the victim. in a big break for the defense earlier, the trial judge told a jury they can consider the lesser charge of manslaughter. arias is charged with first-degree murder in the stabbing and shooting death of her boyfriend, travis alexander in 2008. she has confessed to killing him and could face the death penalty if convicted. nbc has been informing the proceedings out of phoenix for us. diana, back to the judge's decision. did that catch everyone off guard or by surprise? >> reporter: yeah, you know, everyone in the courtroom said, wow, now this jury has options. that is big a deal here. they can choose to go for a second-degree murder or a manslaughter. both of which carry sentences of years in prison as opposed to first-degree murder which carries the death penalty. so now if there is a juror that has any shred of doubt that she was a cold-blooded murderer, they can choose to go with a lesser option and that's considered a big win for the defense. i want to tell you though. this is a really tough decisi

on the murder trial of jodi arias. prosecutor juan martinez has concluded, describing this woman as is a manipulative liar who stopped her ex-boyfriend, travis alexander, planned the murder weeks in advance come a first degree murder conviction would lead to a death sentence. joining us now, attorney and former prosecutor faith jenkins, criminal defense attorney, thank you both for being here. this prosecutor, if i may just start there, he has been one of us, he has been acclaimed by at least immediate performance in this trial, what are your thoughts? >> he faces a lot of criticism, he has been called a bully, a triple, overly aggressive. there is no eyewitness that says this is what happened, and this is how he suffered and died. he told that story today, it was very riveting, and i think he did a great job. lou: jodi arias accused of stabbing alexander 27 times, shooting him in the head, slitting his throat, ear to ear. for months to put that forward and to come to a conviction for a lesser sentence. by the way, the judge just added manslaughter. in the case where someone has
, accused murderer jodi arias is one step closer to learning her fate in the 2008 murder of her ex-boyfriend. moments from now closing arguments will begin in this high-profile case, which for four straight months unfolded like a lifetime movie. but the sexually explicit revelations, sheering consistencies in arias' testimony and a laundry list of courtroom drama were all too real. nbc's diana alvear is outside the courtroom. what can we expect today? >> reporter: hi, thomas. well, they're going to start with jury instructions then they're going to head straight into closing arguments. you'll be listening for two separate kinds of arguments. prosecutors want to nail down once and for all that jodi arias committed cold-blooded premeditated murder. that she knew what she was doing when she killed travis alexander. for example, she dyed her hair a couple days before she last saw him, that she bought gas cans and filled them up so she wouldn't have to stop at a gas station. the defense wants to get the death penalty off the table. they want to do that by trying to get the jurors to see
